An integrated national mortality surveillance system for death registration and mortality surveillance, China

China has yet to establish a complete vital registration system for its 1.3 billion population. To date, the essential data on the causes of death in China used for decision-making and performance evaluation have come from sample-based mortality surveillance systems, including the nationally representative disease surveillance points system of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the vital registration system of the Chinese Ministry of Health. Reliable and timely information on cause-specific mortality is fundamental for informing the development, implementation and evaluation of health policy.
